Advancing Pipeline Leak Detection
Another example of a true Alberta success story is Valmet Automation, a company specializing in turnkey open architecture control and information systems to monitor and control pipeline operations. Founded in 1975, this Calgary-based division of Valmet Corporation has built its reputation on supervisory control and data acquisition systems – SCADA. Microprocessorbased remote terminal units are installed along pipelines to take key measurements, which are then relayed instantly to central control rooms. SCADA is also designed to monitor pipeline leaks – what’s leaking, where and at what rate. The leading North American supplier SCADA systems, Valmet Automation has seen a 48 per cent increase in sales since 1992. Today, Valmet has 25 per cent of the North American market, and OASyS®, a new open operating system, designed and developed in Calgary, promises continued successes for this dynamic corporation.
