Dr. Norbert R. Morgenstern is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta, where he has built the program into an internationally recognized centre of geotechnical excellence. Dr. Morgenstern is admired by students and colleagues alike and has had great impact in the future development of the oil sands. Dedicated to promoting and researching the challenges of oil sands development, his contributions to research are widespread. Developments include research of the geotechnical properties of a four-phase system, oil sands tailing, hydraulic deposition and dyke stability, alternatives for non-fluid disposal of fine tails and, most recently, of non segregating tailings. Dr. Morgenstern’s work has contributed to better surface mining methods, improved safety and lower costs.
