The name Harry Emmet Gunning is synonymous with excellence in education and research. Since arriving in Alberta in 1957, he has helped establish a firm grounding and bright future for science. Dr. Gunning joined The University of Alberta in Edmonton after work at Harvard University, the National Research Council of Canada, and the University of Rochester, Illinois Institute of Technology. His academic career culminated in his 1974 appointment as President of the University of Alberta.
In the early 1960’s, he was a driving force behind the Edmonton Research Development Park Authority. Among Dr. Gunning’s is the development of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta. His awards include the Order of Canada and Province of Alberta Achievement Awards, as well as seven honorary degrees from Canada’s finest universities.
Dr. Gunning has enhanced the growth and public awareness of science and technology in Alberta as a research scientist, teacher and active participant in the development and application of advanced technology. His contribution and commitment to imaginative scientific research and the practical application of its results have provided many tangible benefits for society.
