Innovative Water Reclamation for Sustainable Oil Sands Closure
Dr. Mohamed Gamal El-Din, Professor (U of A) and NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Tailings Water Treatment, is a leader in advanced water treatment. For 20+ years he has developed practical solutions to reclaim oil-sands–impacted water and convert fluid tailings into self-sustaining aquatic ecosystems. His Permanent Aquatic Storage Structure (PASS) approach improves dewatering and stability and enables pit lakes that support life, demonstrated at Suncor’s DPL with U of A – Suncor collaborators. A dedicated mentor, he has 200+ papers and major awards.
