Dr. Mohamed Gamal El-Din, Professor (University of Alberta) and NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Tailings Water Treatment, is a leader in advanced water treatment.
For 20+ years he has advanced solutions to turn fluid tailings into sustainable aquatic ecosystems.
His team developed PASS (Permanent Aquatic Storage Structure) to dewater and stabilize tailings and support pit lakes, demonstrated at Suncor’s Demonstration Pit Lake, shaping reclamation policy and mine closure. A mentor with 200+ papers and a previous ASTech Award winner, he builds Alberta’s capacity in environmental engineering.
