Finalist: Ian Gates, Director, Global Research Initiative, University of Calgary; Jess Tink, Manager, Energy Research Strategy, University of Calgary
Initiative: The Global Research Initiative for Sustainable Low-Carbon Unconventional Resources
The Global Research Initiative (GRI) for Sustainable Low-Carbon Unconventional Resources is a 7 year $75M Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) program that is hosted at the University of Calgary. The GRI is focused on research on methods to improve the environmental impacts of heavy oil/bitumen recovery, hydraulic fracturing, and low-carbon energy solutions. The program has catalyzed energy research at UCalgary, generating 401 Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP; research associates, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows), $24.5 million in international funding, over 150 inventions and 23 start-up companies, 613 proceedings and publications, 182 awards received by GRI researchers.
The GRI is led by Professor Ian Gates and managed by Jessica Tink and an incredible administration team (Srijani Deb, Joyce Simoes, Alejandra Bermudez, Farah Ahmed, Rose Liedke, Katherine Parker, TJ Babey, and Natasha Shevchenko) who have developed highly efficient methods for program and project administration, performance management, and reporting.
