Initiative: Enabling Virtual Reality Experiences with Ultra Low-Latency Networking and Artificial Intelligence
Dr. Hatem Abou-Zeid is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary. He develops advanced AI/ML methods that enable ultra-low-latency connectivity in wireless networks. Through his research, new services such as 5G-enabled virtual reality and industrial automation can become possible and economically viable.
Dr. Abou-Zeid’s research team focuses on applied research, building on his seven years of industrial experience at Ericsson and Cisco Systems. His R&D contributions have resulted in 19 patent filings and several advanced wireless communication methods he designed are deployed in 5G networks worldwide. His research is funded by multiple industrial partners and NSERC Alliance, NSERC Discovery Grants, MITACS, and Alberta Innovates. The awards he received for his research include Best Paper Award at IEEE International Conference on Communications 2022 and the Schulich Research Excellence Award 2023.
