ASTech Alumni Honoured in Inaugural Governor General Innovation Awards
ALBERTA, CANADA (May 20, 2016) – In the scientific and technological communities, being honoured with one prestigious award is a privilege, but being honoured with multiple increasingly significant awards is rare. However two ASTech Foundation Awards alumni, Dr. Robert Burrell and Dr. Breanne Everett, have just become members of this prestigious club by being honoured as Governor General Innovation Award winners.
This is the first year of the now annual Governor General Innovation Awards, where up to six Canadian innovators are chosen based on their exceptional transformative and innovative activities. The Governor General Innovation Awards were created to celebrate excellence in innovation and inspire Canadians to be entrepreneurial innovators.
This string of innovation awards can be traced back to Burrell and Everett's ASTech Foundation Awards in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Dr. Burrell is being honoured for his creation of Articoat™ which is the world’s first use of nanotechnology for wound care, and has been used to save thousands of lives. This innovation also won him the 2010 ASTech Award for Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Technology. Dr. Everett is being honoured for her development of shoe insoles that support diabetics by improving their quality of life and reducing health care costs. This technology also won her the 2012 ASTech Award for Leaders of Tomorrow, and her company Orpyx® Medical Technologies the 2013 ASTech Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Start-Up.
"It's exciting to see that our alumni are being recognized on a national level for the important innovations that are continually coming out of Alberta," says Sue McMaster, ASTech Foundation Executive Director. "While the country often links Alberta to the oil and gas industry, we are also a hotbed for innovative industries as proven by Burrell and Everett's endeavours."
The ASTech Awards are an annual event which recognize the great innovations coming from Alberta. We are currently accepting nominations for the 2016 ASTech Awards until May 31st.
ASTech would like to congratulate Dr. Burrell and Dr. Everett on winning the Governor General Innovation Award, and we wish them the best of luck on their future innovations.
